Otaru Music Box Museum (小樽オルゴール堂)
This was one of the places I couldn’t wait to visit. I simply love music boxes and found the museum shop to be a wonderful visit. The atmosphere was full of joy and I was so tempted to buy a few music boxes, especially the owl and bear! It’s hard to miss when there is a steam clock right in front of the building and many tourists around.
From the Otaru Canal it’s about a good 15 min walk to reach the museum, and about a half an hour walk from Oatru Station. But, you can also from Otaru Station take the Hakodate line (Towards towards Iwamizawa, Chitose, New Chitose Airport, Ebetsu or Tomakomai) to Minami Otaru Station, 1 stop away and then it’s less than 10 mins by foot. Trains from Otaru are very frequent so it’s very convenient!
The Otaru branch is the flagship store. There are shops located in Hakodate, Furano, Kamakura, Kyoto, and even in Okinawa. What I find intriguing about music boxes is how pretty the sounds are. When I was younger I use to have a music box photo frame of Beauty and the Beast, the main theme was played a lot, also the cartoon movie was a big part of my child-hood.
