Chapter 520: Hokkaido Gokoku Shrine (北海道 護国神社)

Hokkaido Gokoku Shrine (北海道 護国神社) in Asahikawa.

The Shinto Shrine is located towards further up from Asahi Bridge. It’s about a good 40-45 min walk from the JR Asahikawa Station, you can also take a bus if you wish but I actually did my morning walk to explore by foot because I wanted to walk across the bridge and see the river.

On the shrine grounds they have a bridge with a small still river. Torii gates and a temizuya. It was completely silent when I visited, perhaps it was too early? It’s also a beautiful treat when I get a chance to visit holy places of worship alone, it makes me feel very relaxed and calm. The architecture is very lovely, spacious and peaceful. The only thing I wasn’t happy about was the fact I took pictures on my iPhone and I hadn’t realised some pictures were switched to square-mode!

  1. I find the pictures that you post of shrines to be wonderfully peaceful–almost like being there. Thanks for sharing these with a New Jersey bound viewer where it is 17 degrees! (Fahrenheit).
