Kumamoto Castle, 2018.
This was one of Japan’s most beautiful and iconic castles. The powerful earthquake of 2016 had caused severe damage to the castle so many areas were closed off for reconstruction. Many historic walls crumbled and what was left were a few surviving buildings. The skies were gloomy that day and it was very upsetting seeing what was once so beautiful be taken down by an unfortunate natural disaster. Although, sadden by the sight, it didn’t dampen my hopes! As Japan is determined to reconstruct the castle, one day it will return again. Not sure how long that will take but it doesn’t take away its 400 year old rich past time.

It is sad to see the castle impacted by the earthquake, but like many of Japan’s significant buildings I’m sure it will be perfectly restored.
